How to make good applications

“You don’t need to think up applications. The bible contains its own applications”

This was the preaching advice I once heard from a famous and faithful bible expositor.

It puzzled me at first because I remembered the long nights of writing bible studies and sermons where I struggled to think of good applications. So, to be told that the bible contained its own applications (and that I just had to find it!) was a great relief!

In this training module, we find out that good applications are derived from the biblical author’s purpose. If we discover the author’s purpose for writing, we discover our application.

We don’t need to “think it up”. However, this application then needs to be fleshed out in the lives of the real people we speak to. In this module, we discuss a way to do this which cuts out a lot of the guesswork!

Finally, we look at three common pitfalls we fall into in our attempt to “think up” applications.

Happy applying!
